Why This Exists

AI systems are being deployed at unprecedented scale — in hiring, healthcare, education, criminal justice, and content moderation. These systems shape who gets opportunities and who gets overlooked.

Yet most people don't know that these systems encode the same biases that have shaped human institutions for centuries. The discrimination is quieter, faster, and harder to challenge.

This project exists to make that invisible infrastructure visible.

We believe that understanding the problem is the first step toward meaningful change. But understanding alone isn't enough. That's why we also provide pathways to action — ways to share this knowledge, demand accountability, and support the organizations doing this work.

About the Author

Joyce Gong is a researcher and writer focused on the intersection of technology, power, and inequality.

Her work examines how algorithmic systems reproduce social hierarchies — often in ways that are difficult to detect and even harder to challenge.

This project draws on peer-reviewed research, investigative journalism, and firsthand accounts to build a comprehensive picture of how AI impacts gender equity.

Our Approach

The content on this site is grounded in:

  • Peer-reviewed research — Studies published in academic journals and conference proceedings, including foundational work on facial recognition bias, language model stereotypes, and algorithmic hiring.
  • Policy documents — Reports and recommendations from organizations like UNESCO, the EU Commission, and civil society groups working on AI governance.
  • Investigative journalism — Reporting that has uncovered real-world harms from biased AI systems.
  • Community knowledge — Insights from people directly affected by these systems, whose experiences often precede formal documentation.

We aim to be rigorous without being inaccessible. Complex problems require clear explanations.
